Umler® is the registration system used to track important details about cars, locomotives, End of Train Devices, intermodal containers, intermodal
chassis, and semi trailers which move by rail in North America.
When it was first built in 1968, the system was known as the Uniform Machine Language Equipment Register, or U.M.L.E.R. for short. In 2009 the U.M.L.E.R. system was modernized and rebranded simply as "Umler" without the acronym.
Umler contains hundreds of elements of information about each piece of equipment, such as:
- Equipment Initial & Number
- Equipment owner
- Built date
- Light Weight, Load Limit, and Gross Rail Load
- Wheel diameter and bearing size
- Height, length, width, and clearance plate
The Umler system is maintained by
