Railinc Corporation is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Association of American Railroads (AAR) that provides information technology, data, and software services to the North American freight railroad industry. Railinc operates the shared data infrastructure that supports safe and efficient interchange of freight cars between railroads.

Among its best-known functions, Railinc administers the registry of reporting marks, the alphabetic codes that identify the owner of each piece of rail equipment, and maintains Umler, the industry's master equipment registry describing the physical and operational characteristics of railcars and other rolling stock. These records are used across the industry to route, inspect, and bill for equipment.

Railinc also supports interline settlement and accounting systems that allow railroads to exchange and reconcile the charges that arise when cars move over multiple carriers, including data feeds that underpin car repair billing. Its messaging and data platforms carry the electronic information that keeps cars, waybills, and repair records synchronized as equipment travels across the continent.

Based in Cary, North Carolina, Railinc functions as a neutral, industry-owned data utility, allowing competing railroads to share the standardized equipment and movement information that the interchange system depends on.
