Brotherhood of Railway Carmen (BRC)
The Brotherhood of Railway Carmen (BRC) is a rail labor organization representing carmen, the railroad employees who inspect, maintain, and repair freight and passenger cars. Carmen perform the safety inspections and mechanical repairs that keep rolling stock in serviceable condition, including the kind of running and interchange inspections governed by the AAR mechanical and interchange rules.
The BRC has a long history as an independent railway craft union representing the carman trade. In the modern era it operates as a division within the Transportation Communications Union, which is itself affiliated with the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM), so the organization is commonly associated with the TCU/IAM family of rail unions.
As a labor union, the BRC negotiates and administers collective bargaining agreements covering the wages, benefits, and working conditions of carmen, and it represents those workers in dealings with the railroads. Its membership is the workforce responsible for the hands-on inspection and repair of railcars across the North American network.
