Tell Tale

A “tell tale” (also known as a “bridge guard” or “bridge warning”) was a device once used to warn brakemen of an approaching overhead obstruction. It consisted of a series of ropes dangling from a cable or an arm such that the loose ends would strike the heads of any employees standing on the tops of train cars.
