Operation Lifesaver

Operation Lifesaver is a nonprofit public-safety education organization established to promote awareness of safety near railroad tracks, particularly at highway-rail grade crossings and along railroad rights-of-way. Its goal is to reduce collisions, deaths, and injuries that occur where roads and pedestrians meet the railroad.

The organization carries out its mission largely through education and outreach, training volunteer presenters who deliver rail-safety programs to drivers, students, professional truck and bus operators, emergency responders, and the public. Its long-running public-awareness campaigns encourage people to expect a train at any time, to obey crossing signals and gates, and to stay off railroad property, which is private and dangerous to trespass upon.

Operation Lifesaver operates as a national organization with affiliated programs across the United States, working in partnership with railroads, government agencies such as the Federal Railroad Administration, law enforcement, and safety organizations. Through this network it coordinates grade-crossing and trespass-prevention education nationwide.
