Intermodal Association of North America (IANA)

The Intermodal Association of North America (IANA) is a trade association representing the intermodal freight industry, the businesses involved in moving freight in containers and trailers across more than one mode of transportation, such as rail, truck, and ocean shipping.

IANA's membership spans the full intermodal supply chain, including railroads (Class I, regional, and short line), ocean carriers and stacktrain operators, port authorities and terminal operators, trucking and drayage companies, third-party logistics providers, intermodal equipment suppliers, and shippers and receivers. By bringing these parties together, the association supports coordination and standardization across the modes that intermodal freight depends on.

The association provides industry data and statistics, education, and forums for its members, and it administers programs and agreements that facilitate the interchange of intermodal equipment among carriers. Through these activities, IANA promotes the efficiency and growth of intermodal transportation in North America, a sector that has become one of the largest and fastest-growing segments of rail freight.
