Brake Beam Unit Guide Wear Liner

A brake beam wear liner, or brake beam unit guide wear liner, is a replaceable wear surface that lines the brake beam guides on a truck sideframe. It is part of the truck brake arrangement and protects the sideframe where the brake beam slides.

Where It Sits

A brake beam carries the brake shoes across the truck and must be free to move toward and away from the wheels as the brakes apply and release. The ends of the brake beam ride in unit guide brackets, or pockets, cast into the sideframe. The wear liner is inserted into those guide brackets so that the end of the brake beam slides against the liner rather than against the bare casting.

What It Does

Each brake application and release slides the brake beam ends in their guides, and that repeated motion would otherwise wear directly into the sideframe pockets. The wear liner provides a smooth, wear-resistant surface for the beam ends to travel on, keeping the beam properly located and protecting the sideframe. By taking the wear itself, the liner preserves the geometry that keeps the brake shoes squarely on the wheel treads.

Wear and Inspection

A worn-out or missing liner lets the brake beam shift and wears into the sideframe, so liners are replaced when worn. The wear limits for the brake beam guides and the related conditions are governed by the AAR interchange rules and field manual.
