Air Brake Association (ABA)
The Air Brake Association (ABA) is a not-for-profit educational organization with the mission to educate, engage, and establish an open dialogue to advance safety and, ultimately, the success of the rail industry. It focuses on the air brake systems and related equipment that allow trains to control their speed and stop safely.
Founded in 1893, the association has a long history of preserving and disseminating technical knowledge related to railroad braking. The forum it provides has allowed for the exchange of knowledge and new ideas, both of which have played an important and integral part in the development and advancement of brake technology throughout the history of the rail industry.
The ABA's work centers on education and the sharing of technical information among the engineers, mechanical officers, suppliers, and operating personnel concerned with railroad braking. Its activities complement, rather than replace, the formal standards-setting role of bodies such as the AAR Brake Systems Committee, which maintains the binding specifications for air brake equipment used in interchange service.
